David Hodge

Leader, Surrey County Council

David was brought up in a Dublin orphanage, leaving at the age of 14 and moving to England at 18. He joined the Army where he saw active service in Borneo and Northern Ireland in a career of 22 years. Shortly after leaving the Army in 1985 David’s wife died of leukaemia leaving him to bring up 3 sons on his own. David married Anne in 2000 and they live in Caterham in Surrey. 

David was elected to Tandridge District Council in 1992 and led campaigns to improve local sports facilities. He was elected to Surrey County Council in 2005 becoming Leader in 2011. David’s mantra is team working – One Team! He has applied this with great success in Surrey where the County Council was named Council of the Year in 2013. He served as Chairman of the County Council Network from 2013-2015 and 2015-2017 as Conservative Group Leader and Local Government Association Vice-Chairman. 

Outside politics David is a dedicated Rotarian, having served as local branch President and as Surrey and Sussex District Governor. He led a national Rotary campaign raising £3M to help eradicate polio in the world and has led teams to Sierra Leone building hospitals, schools and villages.

In 2017 David was made CBE for services to Local Government and Charity.
