Raising awareness of continence issues in care
Incontinence is a precipitating cause for admission to nursing and residential care and affects far more people in the general population than is often recognised. Bladder and bowel leakage is often shrouded in secrecy and yet early intervention can make improvements to symptoms. Providing high quality continence care where needed is fundamental for dignified care and yet education is often lacking in this area. The RCN Bladder and Bowel Forum have developed a learning resource to empower staff to provide evidence based continence promotion and incontinence management. The resource includes understanding how the bladder and bowel function, through to problems and assessment, and on to specialist care and disease-specific management. The forum would like to enable as many people to benefit from this resource as possible, to enable those living with bladder and bowel symptoms to receive the highest quality advice, education and care.
