Digital Smartphone ACR testing: A novel way to improve detection of CKD and reduce cardiovascular events

Clinical Priorities

Chronic kidney disease is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular events and precedes end stage renal disease. NICE recommends annual testing in a range of at-risk patient groups including diabetics and those with hypertension.Despite this, compliance with urine ACR testing remains chronically low. This leaves many patients with possible CKD undiagnosed and sub-optimally managed. This session explores the relevance of ACR testing in the context of both CKD and CVD, and the possible reasons for poor adherence. We present a case study using a novel form of digital ACR testing, conducted at-home using the patient's own smartphone, which has dramatically improved testing rates. This work has laid the foundation for identifying the undiagnosed patient, optimising their care and reducing CVD and CKD morbidity and mortality.
