Research Data Scientist, Barts Life Sciences
Sophie is a research data scientist at Barts Life Sciences and leads data science research across Barts Health NHS Trust. The data science group aims to improve patient experience and outcomes for the local East London population by trialling and validating tools (developed both within Barts Health and externally) on local datasets for deeper understanding of individual risk of disease, disease surveillance, clinical trials recruitment, and to support operational decision making. Her primary research project looks for predictors of vascular complications of diabetes by modelling Electronic Health Record (EHR) data processed with Natural Language Processing (NLP), and she has led development of an EHR-derived dataset of Barts Health COVID-19 patients to support clinical trials and research. Sophie’s research interests are in applying data science techniques to deploy tools for real world public benefit. Prior to joining the NHS, she worked as a senior data scientist within UK civil service and completed a PhD in experimental neuroscience from UCL. Sophie is an NHS-PyCom board member and DigitalHealth.London Digital Pioneer '20.
